Make sure to measure how tall your chair base is from the bottom of the caster inserts to the top of the center cylinder hole or measure your chair base cylinder hole diameter. My chair base height is 2-1/2″, and the cylinder hole on my chair base is slightly less than or equal to 2-1/8″.
This cylinder did not secure into the hole until reaching the thicker part of the shaft, leaving 3-1/2″ of the shaft below the bottom of the cylinder hole of my chair base, causing the cylinder to touch the ground. Thankfully I had some taller casters I swapped to, but still the cylinder is less than 1/8″ from the ground…. My choices now are to either order a taller chair base or else send back this cylinder and spend the $$ more I should have spent on the non-cone side lever cylinder model, which would have been cheaper total had I known to measure better on my end and also ask for the thicknesses of this cylinder because I don’t see that information here in the description or additional information. In my mind, I was just thinking oh cool, this cylinder is also side activated but Crandall managed to make it $$ cheaper than the other one. I was ignorant this would even be an issue. Crandall has some responsibility to warn about this issue in addition to their other warning about the top vs side activation types.
I’m probably just going to try to shim this cylinder with a cut up coke can or else buy a taller base instead of bothering with exchanging the cylinders. Even with my old cylinder, I was not happy with how close to the ground – about 1/2″ – the base of the cylinder sat since I’m planning on getting a rug and don’t want any weird grease rubbing onto the rug’s fibers.
All of this said, btw, the cylinder functions as expected and works well so far.

I ended up ordering the wrong cylinder, but reached out and Sheri was very quick to respond and send out a replacement for the top activated one that I really needed. My chair is working like new again and I’m very happy.

Doesn’t fit a Steelcase Leap V2, takes some machine work on the cylinder head to make it work. Would’ve paid less and bought an OEM if I knew.

After looking over your correspondence with our team, it looks like you purchased the side activated style cylinder instead of the correct top activated cylinder for your chair. When used in a side activated chair, this cylinder requires no modification to work properly. We are still happy to send you the correct cylinder for your chair if you are interested.
