About Our Upholstery Department:
Crandall Office Furniture has been reupholstering office chairs since the day we opened our doors in 2002. Since then our in-house upholstery department has grown to include 6 full time upholstery techs with full sewing and upholstery capabilities.
If your Think chair upholstery has seen better days, or you are looking to upgrade to our new thicker seat pad (more info on that below), you’re in the right place!
**Upholstery Services & All Replacement Chair Cushions are Made to Order and are a Non-Returnable & Non-Refundable Service**
Think Chair Upholstery Process:
Every pad goes through the following process:
- Pads are Put Through our Proprietary Steam Box – This helps sterilize the foam and helps us remove the old fabric.
- Old Seat Pads are Removed and Foam is Recycled
- Fabric is Patterned and Cut
- Back Pads are Sewn & Upholstered per OEM Specs
- New Seat Pad is Installed
- New Fabric is Applied to Seat
- Seat is Re-Assembled
- Upholstery is Complete and Ready to be Shipped
Refundable Pads Return Deposit:
Due to the nature of the V1 Think Chair seat and back pad designs, we do not require your original pads be returned to us, or a pads return deposit like some of the other chairs we offer upholstery on.
Chair / Pad Verification:
**Upon Receiving Your Order, our team will be reaching out requesting pictures of your chair to verify we are upholstering and sending you the correct pads for your chair – Orders will be placed on hold until these pictures are received and verified**
2 Year Warranty:
Our Think Chair upholstery service is warranted against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship for a period of 2 years from receiving the replacement pads.
New Seat Pad:
We’re excited to announce that we are now offering a brand new seat pad on all of our Steelcase Think Chairs.
Our new seat pad is made of high density molded foam, identical to the Steelcase OEM seat pads (including the contoured shape of the original), except we’ve chosen to add an additional 1/2″ of thickness to our new seat cushion for additional comfort. On top of that, our new seat pad is made right here in the U.S.A. and the original foam pad is sent to our foam supplier to be recycled! Win-Win-Win!!

Guilford of Maine's Open House line of fabric has been the gold standard for 100% Polyester woven commercial grade seating fabrics, and our go-to standard upholstery fabric since we opened our doors in 2002. Chosen for it's consistent high quality, and high durability rating of 250,000 double rubs, Open House is a great standard fabric that will last.
We're excited to be offering our new proprietary BioKnit fabric on all of our chairs! This unique knitted fabric is significantly softer than most traditional woven fabrics, is made of 100% recycled material, is bleach cleanable, biodegradable, and made in the USA, all without sacrificing durability.
NOTE: BioKnit is not Available on Gestures with Wrap Back or Headrest at this time.
BioKnit is 100% made, dyed, and knitted in Grand Rapids, Michigan! Keeping things local, just the way we like it!
Being a knitted fabric makes BioKnit softer, stretchier, more breathable, while also being made to size to reduce fabric waste significantly.
BioKnit has a Durability Rating of 250,000 Double Rubs; 16.6x the 15,000 required to be considered "Heavy Duty Commercial Grade"
BioKnit has a cleaning code of WS (Water or Solvent Based Cleaners), and is also Bleach Cleanable (9:1 Water:Bleach)
At the end of it's useful life, BioKnit can be recycled or sent to a landfill where it will safely biodegrade in as little as 1,278 days.
BioKnit is constructed of 100% Post-Consumer Recycled polyester, and can also be recycled again at the end of it's useful life.
Made using the same materials and process as our original BioKnit fabric, our 3D BioKnit fabric is a thicker, more breathable version that utilizes two different yarn colors, creating a unique 3 dimensional look to any office chair.

3D BioKnit Color Note: The front color is the prominent color, and covers more surface area than the back color. If you are trying to match the seat to the back, the front color (listed first) will match much closer than if trying to match the back color. (example: Gunmetal/Splash will match much better with a Gunmetal Seat than a Splash Seat)

We are now offering full-grain leather as a premium upholstery option. We took a great deal of time to source premium leather, which only come from Europe and New Zealand cattle, and provide a luxurious soft and smooth hand feel. Our leather is ~1mm thick, and has a Wyzenbeek Abrasion Rating of 100,000 double rubs.
We cut and sew every hide to-order, by hand. Because of this, every chair will be slightly unique. We also stitch every hide on every chair to match OEM stitching patterns.
We are also offering a limited selection of real leather with a Microfiber Suede coating. This leather is a split leather from Europe with a Microfiber Suede layer applied to it, providing an extremely unique and soft suede feel, while also providing stain resistance, UV protection, and high wear resistance. If you want a real leather with an extremely soft and durable suede-like feel, this a great option!
Texture Note: Our Micro-Suede Leather has a directionality to it - when you move your hand over the leather, it will change the look of the leather.
Ultrafabrics Brisa Vinyl has set the bar for premium grade polyurethane vinyl. The softness and hand feel of Brisa really needs to be felt to be appreciated - it is genuinely one of the softest, most comfortable materials we've ever upholstered with. What's more, it achieves this while providing one of the most breathable vinyls on the market, and maintaining an extreme Wyzenbeek Abrasion Rating of 300,000 double rubs.
For the first time ever, we are now offering a 100% Natural Wool based upholstery option. Our wool fabric has a two-tone weave that provides a very unique look. As with most natural wool products, this fabric has a more textured/course hand feel than a more traditional polyester based fabric, and is prone to a bit of natural pilling over time.

The thicker foam is indeed more comfortable than stock but the Bioknit fabric is not as smooth as I hoped it would be when it rubs against skin sitting on it in shorts. It is better than the stock fabric however. Wished I had chosen another fabric or asked if I could have provided my own suede like microfiber. Comfort is more important than durability in my use case.

TL;DR: I love this chair pad! Very pleased with my purchase. However…. I was a little dismayed at first, struggling to get the seat pad installed. After an hour of watching videos and wrestling with the J-channel, I was about to give up. But then I realized that the the J-channel on my new seat was brand new, and so it required a bit more force to get it snapped in. You really need to hear that CLICK to get it installed properly. Once it clicked, the rest of the installation went smooth. And instantly my chair feels SO MUCH BETTER on my back.

Probably one of the best purchases i’ve made in a long time, and without a doubt one I should have made a long time ago. I just wish this was available, and I knew about it four years ago when we were all sent home to work. With that being said, this new seat pad is great.
I have one complaint, which is very nitpicky and I honestly DO NOT fault Crandall for, and that is that it was a royal pain to get this seat pad installed. I had to take the entire seat off the frame just so I could get enough leverage to push the plastic edge into the frame ducting path.
But I want to stress that this should not be a detractor from buying this seat pad. It’s an absolute God send, and really turned a chair I was about to part with into one I intend to keep for another decade. I’ve had this chair since circa 2009.

A wonderful upgrade that makes a tired old chair feel brand new again! If you have a Steelcase chair that you think is worn out, do yourself a favor and get these Crandall replacement pads. It’s seriously like having a brand new chair in my office. The chair looks great, and feels even better.

Their customer service was prompt and very responsive during the ordering and fulfillment process. The new cushion arrived quickly and the Bioknit fabric looks great. With the help of their instructional video, I was able to remove the old worn-out cushion and install the awesome new cushion in about 10 minutes.
