The gas cylinder on a Steelcase Criterion chair, also known as gas lift, chair lift, shock, pneumatic, piston, hydraulic, or chair lift mechanism, is the component that allows your office chair to go up and down. Filled with compressed gas, and activated by a lever on your chair, the pneumatic cylinder raises and lowers your chair.
When broken, your chair will be left with limited or no height adjustment, may not raise or lower, won’t stay up, won’t go down, or might give you that sinking feeling. In other words, the adjustable height function of your chair is not working right.
However, you can quickly and easily fix your broken Steelcase 453 Criterion Chair with our replacement gas cylinder and helpful instructional videos.
Our Herman Miller Steelcase 453 Criterion gas cylinders are made to fit all Steelcase 453 Criterion chairs.
We have included installation instructions to help you install your aftermarket replacement gas cylinder below. Please feel free to contact us with any issues or questions.

These guys made it so simple for me to replace and install a cylinder for my 23 Yr old Steelcase chair. I was sure this would be a major hassle and am so glad I went with them as opposed to getting something on Amazon, which no doubt would have been a return and a frustrating ordeal (you get what u pay for). The video made it simple. I really didn’t want to go out and buy a pipe to use as a seating tool, so i gently tapped in the retaining ring with a flathead screwdriver and it worked just fine.

Old chair, correct parts, now like a new chair, what’s not to like?

Cylinder was exactly as described. Price was right. Shipping was fast. I would 100% order from Crandall Office Furniture again.

Got lots of help with ordering, but after installing, asked a specific question about the gas cylinder travel, received formal non-informative answer.

Hi Anatoly, can you email me directly at david@crandalloffice.com to share with me the specific question and answer you received? I’d love to look into this and see how we may be able to better help others in the future 🙂

Product worked as designed. Chair no longer sinks when sat upon. Suggested redoing the videos with close-ups because it took me several tries to get it right due to lack of clear, specific, step-by-step instructions. Otherwise, would buy from again!

i just wanted to thank you very much for the quick action in sending me a replacement for a faulty part that you sent initially. You did not hesitate in resending me a new part, I just installed it and it works fine. Thank you

Had to find the installation directions on youtube, and it doesn’t come with what you need to do the job, but using a socket, I was able to make it work. It’s holding up so far.
