New Steelcase V1 Leap Seats:
One of the only complaints we’ve seen from our customers about the Steelcase Leap Chair is that the seat pad is a bit too thin, with many users experiencing discomfort and/or “bottoming out” the foam pad and feeling the plastic structure under the seat pad.
Additionally, we’ve had some customers express concern about using a seat pad that has been sat on by someone else for potentially 10+ years.
Starting in early 2020, we began offering an additional 1/2″ of foam padding as an option on the seat of our Leap chairs, and have gotten a great response!
We’re excited to announce that we are now offering a brand new seat pad on all of our Steelcase Leap Chairs moving forward. Our new seat pad is made of high quality molded foam, identical to the Steelcase OEM seat pads (including the contoured shape of the original), except we’ve chosen to add an additional 3/4″ of thickness to our new seat cushion for additional comfort.
The result is a brand new, thicker seat on every Steelcase V1 Leap chair we sell!
- Brand New Virgin Foam Seat Pad on Every V1 Leap
- High Density Molded Foam
- Contoured Shape
- Increased Comfort
- Made in the USA
- +3/4″ of Additional Thickness

About the Steelcase V1 Leap Chair:
The Steelcase 462 Leap V1 office chair has been the Steelcase flagship chair since first being manufactured in 1999. The V1 Leap was made between the years of 1999 and 2007, when it was upgraded to the Version 2 (V2) model, which is still being made new today. Featuring all current ergonomic adjustments and over-the-top build quality, the Steelcase 462 Leap V1 chair has proven itself as a time tested workhorse, and is still considered by many (us included) to be one of the best built office chairs ever made.
V1 Leap Standard vs. V1 Leap Highback vs. V2 Leap
About the Steelcase V1 Leap Highback
Steelcase played around with various different back and back pad designs through the years on the V1 Leap Chair. Through much of the life of the V1 Leap, a highback variant of the chair was offered as an option. This high back design featured a more upright, taller and sleeker looking back, and clearly helped inspire the new V2 back design.
V1 Leap Standard vs. V1 Leap Highback
The V1 Leap Highback has all the same features as the standard V1 Leap chair, including the fully adjustable arms, liveback, adjustable lumbar (option), lower back firmness, seat slider, etc…The primary difference between the V1 standard and highback are the height and shape of the back.
V1 Leap Highback vs. V2 Leap
While the backs are very similar between the V1 Leap Highback and the V2 Leap, the V1 Leap Highback does not include the updates on the newer V2 model, including the 4D armrests, seat design, base, etc…
The back on the V1 Highback is actually slightly taller than the V2 Leap, and the back pad is noticeably thicker than the V2 as well.
Our Opinion
We at Crandall Office Furniture absolutely love the V1 Leap Highback design. With it’s thicker seat and back pads compared to the V2, many people here find this variant of the Leap chair to be the most comfortable of all Leap chairs.

- 5-Setting Variable Stop Tilt Lock
- Lean Back Tension (how much force it takes to lean back in your chair)

- LiveBack Design
- Adjustable Lumbar (optional)
Steelcase V1 Leap Remanufacturing Process:
Crandall Office Furniture has been the industry leader in remanufacturing office chairs since 2002. Every chair we sell is completely torn down and remanufactured from the ground up in Greenville, Michigan.
We do our absolute best to make sure every chair is as close to new as possible. The only place you may see some variation is in the plastic surfaces – we have no way to resurfacing plastic, so some minor scrapes and dings on plastic pieces are to be expected – we remove anything that has large damage from inventory and use them as parts chairs
We go through all of the working components of every chair, then put it back together with new casters, new gas cylinder, new arm pads, new fabric (always removing the old fabric, chair pads are sterilized with high temperature steam), and we stand behind each of our V1 Leap chairs with a 12 year warranty.
With 10,000+ chairs in stock at all times, we’re ready for orders of a single chair, to thousands at a time.
Be careful of terms like “used,” “refurbished,” or “open box” without doing your research – we’ve outlined our process in detail to make sure you know what to expect. We always encourage our buyers to look into the product they are purchasing, and more importantly, the company they are choosing to do business with. Ratings, reviews, and questions are your friend!

Guilford of Maine's Open House line of fabric has been the gold standard for 100% Polyester woven commercial grade seating fabrics, and our go-to standard upholstery fabric since we opened our doors in 2002. Chosen for it's consistent high quality, and high durability rating of 250,000 double rubs, Open House is a great standard fabric that will last.
We're excited to be offering our new proprietary BioKnit fabric on all of our chairs! This unique knitted fabric is significantly softer than most traditional woven fabrics, is made of 100% recycled material, is bleach cleanable, biodegradable, and made in the USA, all without sacrificing durability.

BioKnit is 100% made, dyed, and knitted in Grand Rapids, Michigan! Keeping things local, just the way we like it!
Being a knitted fabric makes BioKnit softer, stretchier, more breathable, while also being made to size to reduce fabric waste significantly.
BioKnit has a Durability Rating of 250,000 Double Rubs; 16.6x the 15,000 required to be considered "Heavy Duty Commercial Grade"
BioKnit has a cleaning code of WS (Water or Solvent Based Cleaners), and is also Bleach Cleanable (9:1 Water:Bleach)

BioKnit is constructed of 100% Post-Consumer Recycled polyester, and can also be recycled again at the end of it's useful life.
Made using the same materials and process as our original BioKnit fabric, our 3D BioKnit fabric is a thicker, more breathable version that utilizes two different yarn colors, creating a unique 3 dimensional look to any office chair.

(example: Gunmetal/Splash will match much better with a Gunmetal Seat than a Splash Seat)
NOTE: 3D BioKnit is not Available on Gestures with Wrap Back or Headrest at this time.

We are now offering full-grain leather as a premium upholstery option. We took a great deal of time to source premium leather, which only come from Europe and New Zealand cattle, and provide a luxurious soft and smooth hand feel. Our leather is ~1mm thick, and has a Wyzenbeek Abrasion Rating of 100,000 double rubs.
We cut and sew every hide to-order, by hand. Because of this, every chair will be slightly unique. We also stitch every hide on every chair to match OEM stitching patterns.
Â
We are also offering a limited selection of real leather with a Microfiber Suede coating. This leather is a split leather from Europe with a Microfiber Suede layer applied to it, providing an extremely unique and soft suede feel, while also providing stain resistance, UV protection, and high wear resistance. If you want a real leather with an extremely soft and durable suede-like feel, this a great option!
Texture Note: Our Micro-Suede Leather has a directionality to it - when you move your hand over the leather, it will change the look of the leather.
Ultrafabrics Brisa Vinyl has set the bar for premium grade polyurethane vinyl. The softness and hand feel of Brisa really needs to be felt to be appreciated - it is genuinely one of the softest, most comfortable materials we've ever upholstered with. What's more, it achieves this while providing one of the most breathable vinyls on the market, and maintaining an extreme Wyzenbeek Abrasion Rating of 300,000 double rubs.
For the first time ever, we are now offering a 100% Natural Wool based upholstery option. Our wool fabric has a two-tone weave that provides a very unique look. As with most natural wool products, this fabric has a more textured/course hand feel than a more traditional polyester based fabric, and is prone to a bit of natural pilling over time.

65mm (2.5 inch) vs. 75mm (3 inch) Casters:
65mm (2.5 inch) casters are the standard OEM size caster. Due to their size, they work great on low-pile or dense carpets, and operate best with loads of 200lbs or less. Above that weight you will begin to experience a decline in rolling smoothness.
vs.
The larger 75mm (3 inch) casters are oversized casters. Due to their size, the 75mm caster offers a very fluid rolling experience (especially hard floor 75mm casters on a hard surface). These casters also excel in deep carpets, and uneven or rough surfaces. 75mm casters are also great for larger / big and tall users, as they will roll much more smoothly under stress, and also give you an additional bit of height to your chair.
Roller Blade Casters:
Roller blade style casters are most similar to the hard floor style casters we discussed above, and are the larger 75mm size. Due to their construction, they actually give a bit more height to your chair than our 75mm casters. They have a soft treat that is ideal for harder surfaces, but also rolls well on carpet. These roller blade style casters improve rolling smoothness beyond the twin wheel casters, will help protect your floor, and will significantly decrease rolling noise on hard surfaces. These casters also have the advantage of looking much more modern, and stylish than a standard caster.
Roller Blade Casters are Best For:
- The Smoothest Rolling Experience
- Lowest Amount of Rolling Noise
- Hard Surfaces
- Larger / Heavier Individuals
- Deep Carpet Floors
- Uneven or Rough Surfaces
- Those Needing Extra Height in their Chair (slightly more than 75mm twin-wheel)
- Those Looking for a More Modern Look
Soft Floor (Carpet) vs Hard Floor Casters:
Soft floor casters are constructed of a hard plastic and are designed to work best on carpeted floors. Soft floor casters are the default standard caster that most chairs come with, and are much more common to come across.
vs.
Hard floor casters are constructed of hard plastic, but also have a soft rubber or polyurethane coating on the outside of the wheels. Because the floor itself is hard, a soft coating on the caster provides additional grip (similar to the tread on a tire) and rolling smoothness needed for your chair to roll properly.
This soft coating also doubles as a protective material that helps defend your flooring from dings and scratches. When hard plastic carpet casters are used on hard floors with no protection, it’s not uncommon for there to be wear marks, scratches, and damage to the floor itself.
In addition to protecting your floor, you will also notice a significant decrease in rolling noise on hard surfaces when using hard floor casters.
There is also a safety aspect to this soft coating, as soft floor casters tend to slide a bit unpredictably on hard surfaces, and can easily roll further than expected. This can cause issues when sitting down in, or getting up from your office chair.
Ideal For Flooring Types:
- Wood / Hardwood Floors
- Concrete
- Laminate
- Epoxy
- Tile
- Chair Floor Mats

Zero complaints from ordering to assembly. Great chair and I got it on sale so the price made it that much sweeter. Have no problem recommending the V1 high back leap chair…. 5’8″ tall, a tad over 200 lbs.

Great chair and great customer service! My Leap V1 Highback is built like a tank. I’ve given it several 8 hour/day uses and its helped support my back with no pain whatsoever. Dave was able to help out with the questions I had and got me my chair within 2 days from ordering. Highly recommended!

Pristine! I was worried that it would be difficult to reassemble but directions were clear and I was able to put the chair together. It is like new, and the padding on the seat is perfect! I’m 5’6″ 180lbs and the chair can be low enough to the ground to be comfortable.
Adam Z. (verified owner) –
The chair is great, firm, yet padding is comfortable and soft. The arm-rests have some scratches, and the chair (being a v1) does squeak a little more than I expected. The chair came in at 93 lbs for the entire shipment.
Else, it is an amazing chair, believe the reviews both on Crandall and elsewhere on the quality of SteelCase chairs. Crandall chat helped select the V1 over the V2, and specifically the V1 high back.
I’m pleased with my purchase!

Product was satisfactory. Would suggest that website description clarify that this version of Leap V1 high back does NOT have tilt seat function because the diagram of levers under the armrests and other documentation display a lever for seat tilt. At first I thought it was missing.

I only used chair one day before going on a trip, however it was immediately apparent how better the support for my back felt. Looking forward to using the chair when spending long hours at my desk after my travels are over. Chair looked brand new, no signs of prior use observed and love the 12 year warranty.

One of the arms was damaged (plastic cover for pivot arm mechanism). Crandall sent out a replacement arm after sending photos of the damage. Replacement arm was in as-new condition, but the locking pin was sticking out too far, so would not adjust up or down. Compared old arm locking pin to new arm locking pin. NEW arm locking pin was sticking out 0.1245 inches too far, so had to file down locking pin. NOW, replacement arm works properly.

After looking at a ton of reviews online, I decided to go with a Leap V1 Highback instead of the V2, and I have zero regrets.
Pre-COVID, the company I worked for had a selection of standard Leap V1s and V2s in its offices. From memory, I remember liking how much more solid and heavy the V1 feels vs. the V2, but I could never get used to the lower back on the V1. To me, this chair represents the best of both worlds, where I get the upper back support of the Leap V2 and heavier construction of the V1.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention anything about the quality of Crandall’s remanufacturing. Originally, I wasn’t so sure about getting a remanufactured chair, but after reading a lot of positive reviews on Reddit, I decided to give it a shot. I’m so glad I did, because this chair is great. Everything on the chair works like new mechanically, and the upholstery is nice and supportive, just like a new chair. The only indication that this isn’t a new chair is some faded text on the labels under the arm rests, but who cares? You absolutely cannot beat the quality for the price.

This review is more about Crandall than the chair. I was dissatisfied with the chair. I found it did not provide the lumbar support I needed/wanted and was unhappy. It did go together (and taken apart) fairly easily. The reason for the 5-star review was Crandall. They were extremely helpful in picking out the chair and answered my questions completely. When I said I was going to return it they were very helpful and did not try to hard sell me on keeping it. Finally, when they sent me the RMA email, they included directions and videos that really helped in breaking the chair down to ship back. I would HIGHLY recommend Crandall as an excellent merchant!!!
