I have a steelcase 458 chair. According to all of the information online, this cylinder should fit. After I disassembled my chair it wasn’t until I sent photographs of what I removed from my chair did they acknowledge that this was not the right part. And the bad news? They don’t have a part.
Maybe you should list a before and after date in your chair cylinder search identifying when the old style adjuster was discontinued so other people with chair of my vintage won’t waste their time.

Hi Julia, it appears your chair was a spiral-lift style mechanism (which are pretty rare), and was not equipped with a pneumatic gas cylinder from the factory, so a replacement gas cylinder is not the correct part for your chair. Unfortunately when a chair is made that way, there is no way to convert it to the gas cylinder style mechanism. I’m sorry we couldn’t be more help this time 🙂

Your customer service is excellent. It looks like the first gas cylinder I received, was defective.
I called your help line, and Kim was outstanding, in hearing my long, sad story. Kim said she would send out another cylinder right away. Kim was friendly and easy to talk too. The cylinder should arrive in a few days, since I called last Monday. I’m sure this next second cylinder will be fine. Thanks!!
