Crandall Office Furniture’s Herman Miller Aeron aftermarket heavy duty gas cylinders have been constructed to meet original OEM chair specifications and are built to last.
All of our heavy duty gas cylinders are rated Class 4 (Class 4 is the highest class of chair cylinder available).
A office chair gas cylinder is the height adjustment mechanism on the chair. The typical life span of a office chair gas cylinder is 4-7 years, depending on use and abuse. If failed, your chair will be left with limited or no height adjustment, however you can quickly and easily replace your broken Herman Miller Aeron gas cylinder today.
Our Herman Miller Herman Miller Aeron Classic gas cylinders are made to fit all Herman Miller Aeron Classic chairs manufactured before 06-26-2013.
This gas cylinder will not work with the newer remastered style Aeron chair.
If your Aeron Classic chair was manufactured after 06-26-2013, it uses our side activated style cylinder, which can be found here.

Here is the deal. I’m sure this is a fine cylinder, but it requires careful adjustment once installed in the chair, which is not indicated, obviously, in the sales copy.
Adjustment requires taking apart the mechanism housing and accessing an adjustment screw. Oh, and it also requires removing the Seat of the chair to access that screw, which is harder than it sounds, since they use sheet metal screws that go into plastic that must be very carefully replaced once the job is through. It’s nerve wracking.
On the other hand, I never did get to finish the job. Why? Because the housing was threatening to break as I tried to pry it open per the instructions in the video.
In fact, the tabs that hold it together were actually different on my chair from what the video shows.
So, I stopped trying to replace the piston. I’m going to take it to an office furniture store to get things done correctly.
Mind you, I am hardly a klutz. I have extensive experience with all sorts of tools and operations, so that should have been a walk in the park. It was not.

Cylinder appears to not be original equipment – it’s longer by nearly 2″ and has a different end-type to the actuator. I was concerned, wrote Crandall, who assured me it would work, but I would have to adjust the actuator plate for the new actuator height. I installed the cylinder, it worked, and it sits within my preferred height range. What I do not know if the longer cylinder would increase the sitting height by 2″ for someone who needed the original cylinder’s lowest (height) setting. Took 1 star for the hassle/concern, but it works. Hope it lasts 22 years like the original! Good communication with Crandall.

Works just as well, if not better, than the original gas cylinder that was replaced.
